Aaron Cummins

Chief Executive

Aaron was appointed Chief Executive of the Trust in March 2018 after first joining us in January 2014 as Director of Finance / Deputy Chief Executive.

Most recently, Aaron was the Director of Finance / Deputy Chief Executive of Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust – a role he was appointed to in June 2012. Prior to that, he was Director of Finance at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LHCH).

Phil Woodford

Associate Director of Corporate Affairs at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust

Phil has worked in the NHS since 1999, first in general management with the ambulance service, before joining UHMBT in 2008. Phil lives with his family in Lancashire, and spends much of his spare time cycling or walking his dog.

Phil has an MA in Marketing and is experienced in strategic marketing planning, branding, corporate communications, public engagement, business development and customer insight built up over 20 years, split between the private and public sector.

Joy Wharton

Specialist Palliative Care Nurse at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust

Hello my name is Joy Wharton and I’m a Specialist Palliative Care Nurse at UHMBT.

I’m an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Non-Medical Prescriber and am absolutely passionate about all things palliative care.

Based at Furness General Hospital in Barrow, I work clinically with colleagues in the hospital, community and St Mary’s Hospice, and in my leadership role with staff across the Trust and locality to provide the best quality of care for patients with palliative and end of life care needs.

David Wilkinson

Director of Workforce & OD

David is our Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, and started in post in July 2013. David has over 20 years HR experience in the NHS, working in acute, mental health and community settings in London and the North West. He was a member of the national project group that introduced the annual NHS Staff Survey, was involved in the piloting and testing phases of both the Consultant Contract and the Job Evaluation system, and is currently a member of the North West Regional Clinical Excellence Awards Subcommittee. He is committed to embedding the NHS Constitution’s Staff Pledges into every aspect of employees’ working lives and in creating the right conditions for staff to flourish and give their best for patient care.

Chris Hopson

Chief Executive at NHS Providers

Chris joined NHS Providers as chief executive in September 2012 after a career in politics, commercial television and the civil service.

Chris leads the organisation, with a particular emphasis on setting strategy, senior stakeholder management, acting as the principal public voice of the organisation and representing the provider sector on a range of NHS system level committees.

Foluke Ajayi

Chief Operating Officer

Foluke is our Chief Operating Officer, and started in post in April 2015.

She provides strategic leadership to the operational teams and is instrumental in driving and leading improvements in clinical care and performance right across the Trust.

Foluke, a former clinical scientist joined the Trust from Leeds Teaching Hospitals, where she began work in 2008, first as a Directorate Manager, then progressing to lead the Trust’s internationally-renowned cancer centre as General Manager.

Before working in Leeds, Foluke held senior positions with NHS Employers and the Department of Health, where she was deputy to the Chief Scientific Officer.

Rob Webster

Chief Executive at NHS Confederation

Rob joined the NHS Confederation as chief executive in February 2014. He has worked in healthcare since 1990, taking on national leadership roles in the Department of Health on policy, transformation and delivery. He has been a director for both the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit in the Cabinet Office, and a national public/private partnership.

Rob has also been a successful chief executive in the NHS, running commissioning organisations and providers of NHS services. He has chaired formal Cancer, Primary Care, Community Trust and Learning Disability Networks. He has a history of effective partnership working and a strong commitment to system leadership.

Rob is defined by a values-based approach to leadership. He was recently recognised by NHS Employers for his work as a "Personal, Fair and Diverse" Champion". Alongside his role at the Confederation, Rob is a visiting Professor at Leeds Beckett University. He was proud to be made a Fellow of the Queen’s Nursing Institute in November 2014.

Sue Smith

Executive Chief Nurse

Sue took up her role as Executive Chief Nurse in December 2013. Sue has a BSc in health management and an MSc in leadership. Sue ‘came home’ to Morecambe Bay after starting her career here as a Registered General Nurse. Sue has operated at Board level in a number of very well respected Trusts, and has also worked on a number of national work-streams in relation to recruitment, safe staffing and widening careers.

Deputy Director of Clinical Governance

Stuart joined the Trust as Deputy Director of Clinical Governance in early 2019. He is a Paediatric Nurse by background, with over 10 years' nursing experience from working in the Emergency Department at the Royal Bolton Hospital and also some time working in Australia. Whilst working as a nurse, Stuart developed an interest in the legal aspects of healthcare and decided to study law and pursue a career in the legal sector.
